WE PUT CHILDREN’S RIGHTS FIRST!

The school is an 'oasis in the city' as it used to be a public park, and is still a lovely green space of refreshment and renewal of spirit. It was founded in 1948 by Clare Ellis Brown, the Mayoress of Durban as a Nursery School and Day Care Centre for working parents. We are open during school holidays, except for the December school holidays. We are a registered not-for-profit organisation (PBO) and we are registered as a private school with the Department of Basic Education. We are a 'Listening School' and embrace difference and diversity. We are therefore sensitive to language, culture, religion, gender and social or physical differences.

We have an 'anti-bias' approach to teaching and learning that supports 'uBuntu' practice, as seen on our Mission and Vision Statement and want every parent, and child to feel heard and supported by our staff. We believe that all young children are strong, resourceful and capable learners. If we are attentive to them, they surprise us daily with their insights and discoveries. We use an 'enquiry method' of teaching and learning, where children are free to explore the possibilities of materials and resources. The outdoor playground is also a classroom. The environment is the 'third educator' and the children, supported by the teachers, test their capabilities in the world around them. We believe that the children are our 'first educator' as we learn from them how to support and extend their learning into a new zone. We follow the CAPS curriculum of the Department of Basic Education and the National Curriculum Framework for 0-4 year olds, however enhance the curriculum through the resources and activities we provide. Maths is an emergent ability, we mathematize experiences in joyful ways through music, song, dance and educational games, construction and block play. We encourage science discovery through dialogue while interacting with water, sand and other materials. The imagination is central to the way children learn, and encourages language and literacy through dramatic play, creative art activities, stories and picture reading books. We have a comprehensive library and a 'family literacy project'. The parents can borrow picture story books to read to their children on weekends. We expect active involvement from our parents in fundraising and in attending parent meetings four times a year as the school depends on parent support to survive and thrive. Parents form our management committee, together with a staff representative and the Principal, who is employed by the management committee as Manager of the school. The Principal ensures an excellent teaching and learning environment, and that any concerns from parents, children or staff are dealt with promptly and efficiently.

Claire Ellis Brown The programme is guided by the Educational Principal (Nora Saneka) who holds an Honours Degree in Special Needs Education. The focus of our curriculum is to create a secure environment where children learn through play and where each child’s happiness is of the essence. Children who experience barriers to learning are carefully monitored under the guidance of an occupational therapist. Extensive research into reading approaches and mathematical development aides towards the setting of the programme.
